How to make Identd and DCC work with the Windows XP Personal Firewall

The first step is to go to your control panel. To get there, open the start menu and click control panel. The window which opens should look like the picture below.

Find the icon marked "Network and Internet Connections" and click it. The window should change to the following.

Now find the icon marked "Network Connections" and click it. The window should once again change to something similar to the following.

You should see a section marked "Dial-up" or "LAN or High-Speed Internet" similar to the section I have in the above. Select the appropriate icon for the connection you are working with, right-click it, and left-click "Properties." This should open a window similar to the following.

Click the tab marked "Advanced."

To turn the firewall on, put a check in the box next to "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet" and move on to the next step. To turn it off, make sure that box is unchecked and click "OK."

Next, open mIRC and click the Tool menu, then select "Options". Within the window that pops up, select the "Connect" section, the "Options" sub-section, and then click the "Advanced" button.

Find the box marked "DCC Ports" and specify the range as you see fit. Replace the number in the boxes marked "First" and "Last" with 3072. Click "OK."

Now switch back to the window where you turned the firewall on, ensure that you have enabled the firewall, then click the button marked "Settings." This will open the following window.

First we will add port 113 for Identd. To do this, click the "Add" button, then fill in the appropriate information as follows. Also fill in the field marked "Description of service:" with "identd."

I have filled in the Name of my computer as "MyComputer." You should replace this with the name of your computer. To find the name of your computer, open the start menu and find the icon marked "My Computer." Right-click that icon and click properties. This will open a new window. Within this new window, click the tab marked "Computer Name." Your computer's name will be listed there. Once you have filled the fields in appropriately, click "OK." You should now see "identd" on the list of Services with a checkmark in the box beside it.

Now we will add a port for DCC. Since we have set port 3072 as the DCC port, you will have to allow port 3072. Once again, click "Add" and fill in the information properly. Also fill in the field marked "Description of service:" with "DCC."

Notice that once again I have filled in the Name of my computer as "MyComputer." You should replace this with the name of your computer. To find the name of your computer, open the start menu and find the icon marked "My Computer." Right-click that icon and click properties. This will open a new window. Within this new window, click the tab marked "Computer Name." Your computer's name will be listed there. Once you have filled the fields in appropriately, click "OK." You should now see "DCC" on the list of Services with a checkmark in the box beside it. When you have finished adding all of the necessary ports click "OK" in this window and the previous.
